At the southern end of Camps Bay Beach, set into the rocks just off Victoria Road, is a rectangular seawater pool that solves the single biggest problem with swimming on this coast. The open Atlantic is cold and the shore break is strong. The tidal pool is calm, shallower, sheltered by rock, and refills naturally with every high tide.
It is one of the larger tidal pools on the Atlantic Seaboard and among the easiest to reach, which makes it a favourite with families, older swimmers and anyone who wants to actually swim rather than brace and retreat.
Why it works
The pool sits behind a rock barrier that takes the force out of the swell. The water is the same temperature as the sea but without the waves, the rip and the backwash, so it feels considerably more manageable. There is a strip of white sand and a lawn alongside, and the surrounding boulders double as somewhere to leave a towel and sit in the sun.
Tidal pools like this one date back to the early development of Camps Bay as a seaside resort in the early twentieth century, when the suburb was a picnic destination reached by tram.
Swimming with children
This is the spot to bring children on this stretch of coast. The water is enclosed and calm, and the depth is manageable. Two practical notes: the floor is rocky in places, so water shoes are worth packing, and the water is still Atlantic cold, so expect shorter swims than you would get in False Bay.
Supervision is still required. Calm is not the same as risk free.

The ramp access makes this one of the more accessible swimming spots on the Atlantic Seaboard, which is not true of most beaches nearby.
Cleaning and upkeep
The City of Cape Town cleans its tidal pools using eco friendly methods, high pressure hosing rather than harsh chemicals, following a pilot programme developed with local free divers and ocean conservation groups. The pools refill naturally on the tide.
After heavy storms the pool occasionally needs restoration work, and it can take a day or two to refill completely afterwards depending on tides and swell. If you arrive to find it drained, that is usually why.
Best time to visit
Mid morning on a windless day is ideal. High tide tops the pool up and gives you the most water. Late afternoon is quieter than midday in peak season, and the pool catches the last of the sun before the mountain shadow arrives.
There is a mobile sauna operation that sets up at various Atlantic Seaboard pools for cold plunge and sauna sessions. Schedules vary, so check locally if that appeals.
