Glen Beach is the small sandy cove immediately north of Camps Bay Beach, separated from it by a rock outcrop that runs down to the waterline. It is a different proposition to its neighbour: smaller, quieter, more local, and built around surfing rather than sunbathing.
In summer, sand builds up and the two beaches effectively merge. Winter storms strip it back out again, so the character of the place shifts through the year.
The surf
Glen is Camps Bay’s surf spot. It is a semi exposed beach break known for hollow, punchy waves that work best on a south west groundswell, and it is offshore in an east or south east wind. The surrounding boulders give it some shelter from the South Easter when the main beach is unusable.
It suits intermediate and experienced surfers and bodyboarders. The waves are powerful for their size, there are rocks, and rip currents run through the cove. On small days it can be gentler, but this is not the place to take a first lesson. Beginners are far better served at Muizenberg or Big Bay.
Best surfed early, before the wind comes up.
Swimming
Not recommended. The combination of strong waves, rocks and rip currents means Glen is a place to cool off in the shallows rather than swim properly. There are no lifeguards. If you want to swim, use the Camps Bay tidal pool or the pools at Maiden’s Cove.
Who it suits
- Surfers and bodyboarders with some experience
- Anyone wanting a quieter, more local feeling cove than the main beach
- Dog walkers. Dogs are permitted on lead, which makes it popular with local residents
- Photographers, for the rock formations and the angle back towards the Twelve Apostles
Check current signage on dog rules before you go, as beach by beach regulations do change.
Getting there
There is no dedicated parking. Park in Camps Bay and walk north along the beach, crossing the rocks at the northern end, or take the path over the dunes. At low tide you can walk around the boulders directly.
Facilities are minimal. This is a natural cove rather than a serviced beach, so bring water, shade and anything else you need.
